前回のハ行に続いて今回はマ行です。
毎回知らなかった諺を見つけては、
なるほど〜と勉強になります。
お国違えば諺も違いますね。

蒔かぬ種は生えぬ You must sow before you can reap
馬子にも衣装 Fine feathers make fine birds
まさかの時の友は真の友 A friend in need is a friend indeed
待つ身は長い A watched kettle never boils
待てば海路の日和あり Good things come to those who wait
身から出たサビ As you sow, so must you reap
三つ子の魂 百まで What is bred in the bone will never leave the flesh
見ざる 聞かざる 言わざる See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil
ミイラ取りがミイラになる Many go out for wool and come home shorn
三日坊主 (An) easy quitter
見つけた者が勝ち Finders keepers
負けるが勝ち He who fights & runs away will live to fight another day
見かけで判断するな Don’t judge a book by its cover
みんなの仕事はやり手がない Everybody’s work is nobody’s work
昔取った杵柄 One never forgets one’s trade
無駄が無ければ不足も無い Waste not, want not
餅は餅屋 Every man to his trade (Leave it to the specialist)
物言う時あり黙る時あり There is a time to speak & a time to be silent
物を貰うに好みは云えず Don’t look at a fit horse in the mouth
持ちつ持たれつ Give and take
物事全て理由あり Everything is meant to be
目には目を歯には歯を As eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth
目は口ほどに物を云う Eye is the window to one’s soul
元の木阿弥 Ending up right back where one started
物は言いよう It is not what you say but how you say it
物は試し The proof of the pudding is in the eating

私は個人的に「餅は餅屋」という諺が好きで、
自分では出来ない事や苦手な事を、
その道のプロの方が美しくアッという間に
こなしたりする姿を見ては、
「餅は餅屋。。。」と心でつぶやきます。
