今月の英語はことわざの「は行」です。今回も矛盾点はいくつかありましたが、どれも結局的を得ています。今回思ったのは、例えば「火のないところに煙は立たぬ」＝「Where
there is smoke, there is a fire」これはうわさが立つ以上、何らかの事実があるはずだという意味でよく使われますが、英語では肯定文で、日本語では否定文だというところに、文化の違いが現れているなあと思います。それから、この「人のうわさも七十五日」＝「A wonder lasts but nine days.」から察するに、どうやら日本のほうがウワサが続く期間がかなり長いようです（笑）
