今年で滞米生活36年目の私ですが、未だに定冠詞・不定冠詞や複数・単数
の使い分け方が判らず、Editor(主人)のお世話になることがしばしば。
この「単数・複数」に関して、とても役立つサイトに遭遇したので、

失敗例１： 複数名詞のようなもので単数形動詞で受けるものに、動詞の複数形を使ってしまう。
例文１： １万ドルというのは大きなお金です。
X Ten thousand dollars are a lot of money.
○ Ten thousand dollars is a lot of money.
失敗例２： 単一の事物でも常に複数扱いなっているものを、動詞の単数形で受けてします。
例文２： 私のハサミはセキュリティーチェックで没収されました。
x My scissors was confiscated at the security checkpoint.
○ My scissors were confiscated at the security checkpoint.
失敗例３： Each of で始めておきながら複数形で受けてしまう。
例文３： 応募者は各自、質問票に記入するよう求められました。
× Each of the applicant were asked to fill out a questionnaire.
○ Each of the applicant was asked to fill out a questionnaire.
失敗例4: 集合名詞(単数扱い)を複数形動詞で受けてします。
例文4: そのカップルは協会で結婚式を挙げるつもりでいます。
× The couple plan to get married in a church.
○ The couple plans to get married in a church.
失敗例５： 複数扱いの名詞（例：people)を単数形で受けてしまう。
例文５： 職員全体の８０％を超える者が自分の仕事に満足している。
× More than 80% of personnel was satisfied with their jobs.
○ More than 80% of personnel were satisfied with their jobs.
失敗例6: 複数形の名詞に気を取られて、複数形動詞を使う。
例文6: がっかりさせられたのは、自分の成績です。
× It were my grades that got me down.
○ It was my grade that got me down.
失敗例７： There/Here で始まる文章で続く動詞に迷う。
例文７： このあたりには公衆電話はありません。
× There is no public phones around.
○ There are no public phones around.
失敗例8: 数えられない名詞を複数形にして、動詞も複数形で受ける。
例文8: 情報は最新のものではありません。
× The informations are not up to date.
○ The information is not up to date.
