英語と日本語のことわざの類似点
亜矢ちゃんが紹介している英語のことわざシリーズ、とっても興味深く読んでいます。そして、時々感じるのですが、言語、文化、歴史といった違いにも関わらず、日本語のことわざの中には、こうした英語と共通しているものが多くあり、日本独特の諺と思っていたら、英訳した諺だったり、語源が日本のものでなかったりします。今月はそう思われる慣用句を幾つかご紹介したいと思います。
一石二鳥：Kill two birds with one stone （もともと英語だった諺）
早起きは三文の徳：The early birds get the worms
悪事千里を走る： Bad news has wings.
鬼の居ぬ間に洗濯： When the cat’s away, the mice will play.
溺れる者は藁をも掴む：A drowning man will catch at a straw.
終わりよければすべてよし：All’s well that ends well.
蛙の子は蛙： Like father, like son.
勝てば官軍、負ければ賊軍 ：Might is right. Losers are always in the
wrong.
恋は盲目(あばたもえくぼ) ：Love is blind.
光陰矢のごとし：Time flies like an arrow
幸運の前髪を掴め：Seize the fortune by the forelock.
後悔先に立たず(覆水盆に返らず)： It’s no use for crying over spilt milk.
郷に入りては郷に従え：When in Rome, do as the Romans do
芸は身を助ける： Art brings
cheese.
紺屋の白袴:：The shoemaker’s wife goes barefoot.
大山鳴動して鼠一匹： The Mountains have brought forth a mouse. (これはイソップ寓話からだそうです)
ただより高いものはない：There is no such thing as a free lunch.
塵もつもれば山となる：Every little bit counts.
沈黙は金：Speech is sliver, silence is gold.
鉄は熱いうちに打て： Strike while the iron is hot
天は二物を与えず：God does not give two gifts.
時は金なり： Time is money (ベンジャミンフランクリン)
隣の芝生は青い：The grass is always greener on the other side of the
fence
捕らぬ狸の皮算用：Don’t count your chickens before they hatch.
類は友を呼ぶ：Birds of a feather flock together
