生きた英語 ことわざ ヤ行

今月はヤ行ではじまることわざです。毎回、へ~、は~、と頷きながらまとめています。矛盾するものもあるけれど、読むと面白いですね。

柳の枝に雪折れはなし

Live and learn.
It's never too late to learn.
One is never too old to learn.

薮をつついて蛇を出す
to stir up trouble for oneself; to scare out a snake by poking at the brush.

病は気から
sickness and health start with the mind.

病を知れば癒ゆるに近し
A disease known is half cured.
To know the disease is half the cure.

勇者は一度しか死なない
The valiant never taste of death but once.

友人は離れているときが最も仲がよい
Friends agree best at a distance.

雄弁は銀沈黙は金
Speech is silver, silence is golden.

ゆっくり急げ
Make haste slowly.

湯水と一緒に赤ん坊を流すな
Don't throw (or empty) the baby out with the bath water.

揺りかごの中で学んだことは、墓場までもっていかれる
What is learned in the cradle is carried to the grave.

ゆりかごを動かす手が世界を支配する
The hand that rocks the cradle rules the world.

許して忘れよ
Forgive and forget.

夜明け前がいつも一番暗い
It's always darkest before the dawn.

よい垣根がよい隣人をつくる
Good fences make good neighbors.


よい血統は欺かない
Good blood cannot lie.

よいことは待つ甲斐がある
Good things are worth waiting for.

よい妻はよい宝
A good wife is a good prize.

よい始まりがよい終わりとなる
A good beginning makes a good ending.

陽気な道連れは道中の馬車
A merry companion is a wagon in the way.

容色は花のごとく色あせる
Beauty fades like a flower.

よく飛ぶためには、まず後ろへ引け
One must draw back in order to leap better.

よく学びよく遊べ
Study hard and play hard. Work hard and play Hard!

予想外なことほど確実にやってくるものはない
Nothing is so certain as the unexpected.

四つ(二つ)の目の方が二つ(一つ)よりよく見える
Four (or Two) eyes see more than two (or one).

世の中は相持ち
Give and take.
Give and take is fair play.
Live and let live.

夜は助言を生みだす母である
The night is mother of counsel.

予防は治療にまさる
Prevention is better than cure.

寄らば大樹の陰
Look for a big tree when you want shelter; Serve the powerful for your own good.

喜び勇んでする苦労は苦労でない
A willing burden is no burden.

喜びと悲しみは隣同士
Joy and sorrow are next door neighbors.

弱いものいじめをする人は必ず憶病者である
A bully is always a coward.

弱り目に祟り目
misfortunes never come singly.

四十歳の馬鹿は本当の馬鹿
A fool at forty is a fool indeed.
